Gainesville has both a small-town feel and a lively nightlife, centered around
the University of Florida. The state’s largest and oldest university is home
to the Gators sports teams and is where the Gatorade sports drink was invented.
Around the university, restaurants and clubs cater to student budgets and offer
a variety of entertainment venues. There are a number of art museums and galleries
throughout the city, and the Florida Museum of Natural fossils includes a walk-through
underwater scene. Biking along the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail is a popular
activity as well as tubing or kayaking down the Ichetucknee River. If you want
to see wildlife, visit Morningside Nature Center, where trails follow the habitats
of deer and more than 130 species of birds.
